OVERVIEW: Aircraft-launched Torpedo, designed for anti-submarine warfare. It served as the payload for the Malafon anti-submarine missile system.

DETAILS: The L4 is a 533 mm diameter active sonar-guided torpedo developed by the French Direction Technique des Constructions Navales. It weighs approximately 525 kg and is powered by an electric motor with a nickel-cadmium battery. The torpedo can reach speeds of up to 30 knots with a maximum range near 6,000 meters. It carries a 104 kg HBX warhead and is capable of operating at depths up to 300 meters.

FUNCTION: After deployment, the L4 enters a circular search pattern using active sonar to locate submarines. Upon target acquisition, it accelerates to engage submerged targets up to 5 kilometers away.
